Pevensey Sand - 1066

On September 28, 1066 Duke William of Normandy landed his war fleet at Pevensey, East Sussex in southern England. From here, he and his army of infantry, archers and cavalry would begin their invasion of England.

The beach is quieter than most of the beaches along this stretch of the coast and, unusually for this area, there are no cliffs, which is perhaps why it was chosen as the landing point for the Norman invasion.

During the 12th century, the former harbour became a busy commercial port, although today the coast has receded so the village of Pevensey is now about one mile away from the beach.
